Interactive Career Wheel

The Career Wheel is an essential coaching tool designed to help you assess and visualise your current career status. By providing a visual representation of your current state, the Career Wheel allows you to identify strengths and weaknesses in your professional journey. Understanding this concept is essential for enhancing your career satisfaction and achieving a more balanced life.

Assessing Life Balance

To effectively use the Career Wheel, it’s important to understand the different areas it measures. These areas typically include:

Passion and Enthusiasm: How excited do you feel about your work?

Challenge: Are you adequately challenged in your role?

Flexibility: Does your job offer the flexibility you need for personal commitments?

Career Progression: Are there opportunities for advancement within your organisation?

Personal Growth: Does your work allow for personal development and self-discovery?

Work/Life Balance: Do you feel you can balance work responsibilities with personal life?

Skill Development: Are there opportunities to learn new skills relevant to your career?

How to Rate Satisfaction Levels

To complete your Career Wheel ratings, follow these simple steps:

Step 1. Assess each area of your career based on the provided category headings.

Step 2. On a scale of 1 to 100 (100 being fully satisfied), rate your satisfaction in each area. Mark these ratings on the segments of your wheel. The Interactive Career Wheel below automatically connects the marks to visualise where you currently stand and highlight areas that may need attention.

Step 3. Once you’ve filled out the wheel, scroll to the bottom of the page and select “Download PDF.” This will create your personalised Career Wheel report.

Step 4. Review your report, which will be dated with your name, and include a space for goal setting.

Step 5. If you’re completing the Career Wheel before a workshop or coaching session, consider printing a copy to bring along or have it ready to share on screen if the session is virtual.

Setting SMART Goals

Once you’ve assessed your Career Wheel, it’s crucial to set SMART goals — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Setting meaningful goals based on your assessments can significantly enhance your career satisfaction.

Specific: Clearly define what you want to achieve in each area.

Measurable: Determine how you’ll measure success.

Achievable: Ensure that your goals are realistic given your current situation.

Relevant: Align your goals with your overall aspirations and values.

Timebound: Set deadlines for achieving these goals.

For example, instead of saying “I want to improve my skills,” a SMART goal could be “I will complete an online course in project management by end of next quarter.”

Identifying Areas of Improvement

After setting your goals, analyse the results from your Career Wheel assessment to pinpoint areas with low satisfaction levels.

Look for recurring themes across different life domains. For instance, if both your work/life balance and personal growth ratings are low, it may indicate a need for better time management or prioritsation of self-care activities. Recognising these patterns can provide valuable insights into the changes you need to make.

Creating Action Plans

With identified areas for improvement, it’s time to develop action plans that will help you address these issues effectively.

Break Down Goals into Actionable Steps: Divide each goal into smaller tasks that are easier to manage.

Set Timelines for Each Step: Assign deadlines to keep yourself accountable.

Identify Resources Needed: Determine what tools or support you many need to achieve these goals.

For example, if improving work/life balance is a goal, actionable steps might include setting specific work hours, prioritising tasks, or scheduling regular breaks.

Tracking Progress

Monitoring your progress is essential for staying on track and making necessary adjustments along the way.

Regular Check-ins: Set aside time weekly or monthly to review your progress towards your goals.

Journaling: Keep a journal to document achievements and challenges as you work towards improvement.

Don’t forget to celebrate your successes along the way! Acknowledging milestones — whether big or small — can provide motivation and reinforce positive behaviour.

By utilising the Career Wheel tool effectively, you can gain invaluable insights into your career satisfaction and take actionable steps toward improvement. Embrace your journey as an ongoing process — your career development is a dynamic path filled with opportunities for growth and fulfillment.
