What is the Mood Meter?

The Mood Meter is a visual tool that categorises emotions into four quadrants or zones based on two measurements: energy (high energy and low energy) and levels of comfort (pleasant or unpleasant). Each quadrant represents different emotional states. We have used the following category colours:

  • Yellow Zone: High energy, high levels of comfort (pleasant)

  • Red Zone: High energy, low levels of comfort (unpleasant)

  • Green Zone: Low energy, high levels of comfort (pleasant)

  • Blue/Purple Zone: Low energy, low levels of comfort (unpleasant)

By identifying your emotions on this grid, you can gain insights into your current emotional state and how it influences your behaviour and decision-making.

History of the Mood Meter

The Mood Meter was created by Marc A. Brackett, the founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. Brackett has dedicated over 25 years of researching the role of emotions and emotional intelligence in various aspects of life. His groundbreaking book, Permission to Feel, outlines the importance of emotional awareness and provides strategies for developing emotional intelligence in both children and adults. The Mood Meter serves as a practical application of these concepts, helping individuals navigate their emotions more effectively and improve their overall well-being.

The Science Behind the Mood Meter

Understanding the science behind the Mood Meter can deepen your appreciation for how it helps you manage emotions. At its core, the Mood Meter leverages a concept known as “name it to tame it,” which is rooted in neuroscience.

When you experience strong emotions, your amygdala—the part of your brain responsible for processing emotions—can trigger a fight-or-flight response. This reaction is automatic and often overwhelming, making it difficult to think clearly. However, by labelling your emotions using the Mood Meter, you activate your prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for higher-order thinking and self-regulation.

Labeling Emotions: When you identify and name your feelings, you engage the part of your brain that controls language. This process helps calm the amygdala and reduces the intensity of your emotional response. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by anxiety or anger, you can say to yourself, “'I’m feeling anxious about this situation.” This simple act of naming your emotion helps regain control.

Verbalising Feelings: By expressing what you feel, you not only clarify your emotional state but also create a pathway of introspection. This means that wen you articulate your feelings, such as saying “I feel angry,” you are metabolising that emotion. You’re acknowledging it rather than suppressing it, which allows you to deal with it more effectively.

Enhancing Social Connections: Labelling emotions isn’t just beneficial for self-regulation; it also improves your relationships with others. When you express vulnerability by admitting feelings like sadness and connection with those around you. This openness encourages others to respond positively and supportively.

Using the Mood Meter: The Mood Meter itself serves as a practical tool to help you label and understand your emotions. By plotting your feelings on the grid, you can visually assess where you are emotionally and gain insights into how those feelings impact your behaviour. This structured approach makes it easier to identify patterns over time and develop strategies for emotional regulations.

By understanding these scientific principles behind emotional regulation, you can better utilise the Mood Meter in your daily life. It empowers you to recognise, articulate, and manage your emotions effectively, leading to improved emotional intelligence and well-being.

How to Use the Mood Meter

Rate Your Energy and Levels of Comfort (pleasant or unpleasant)

  1. Reflect on your feelings: Take a moment to think about how you are feeling right now. Identify specific emotions that resonate with you.

  2. Assess levels of comfort: Rate your feelings on a scale from -5 to +5, where -5 represents less comfortable emotions (like sadness or anger) and +5 represents more comfortable emotions (like joy or excitement).

  3. Assess energy: Rate your energy levels on a similar scale from -5 to +5, where -5 indicates low energy (like tiredness or lethargy) and +5 indicates high energy (like excitement or anxiety).

Plot Your Ratings

  1. Locate your coordinates: Based on your ratings for pleasantness and energy, you will have two coordinates. For example, if you rate pleasantness as +3 and energy as -2, your coordinates would be (3, -2).

  2. Find your quadrant: Use these coordinates to determine which of the four quadrants of zones you fall into: Yellow, Red, Green or Blue Zone. In the example, (3, -2) falls in the Green Zone.

  3. Plot your emotion: On the Mood Meter grid, find the spot that corresponds to your coordinates. This visual representation helps you understand where you are emotionally. In the example, (3, -2) falls on the “Satisfied” spot. Consider this location, and the emotions that surround this emotion.

  4. Reflect on your position: Consider what led you to this emotional state.Which resonates the most? What lead you to chooe those emotions as a description for how you are feeling?

By regularly rating and identifying your emotions using the Mood Meter, you’ll enhance your emotional awareness and develop better strategies for emotional regulation.
